Our Story

Made by hand.
Made to last.

The House of Shaker was founded by Darren Bray — a craftsman who believed that the best furniture is the kind that looks as though it was always there. Every piece we make is built in our Suffolk workshop, by hand, to order.

The Craft

A workshop rooted in tradition

Darren has spent over two decades working with wood, learning a craft that rewards patience and precision above all else. The Shaker tradition — with its emphasis on honest materials, simple lines, and flawless joinery — has always felt like the natural home for that kind of work.

The House of Shaker was born from the conviction that homes deserve furniture made to fit them perfectly: not adjusted, not approximated, but made to measure from the very first sketch. Everything we build starts with a visit, a conversation, and a proper set of measurements.

Our workshop is based in Suffolk, and we install throughout Suffolk and London. We work slowly and carefully, taking on a limited number of commissions at a time so that every project gets the attention it deserves.

"I wanted to make furniture that didn't try to be clever. Just well-made things, in good materials, that fit the room they were made for."
— Darren Bray, Founder

Made to measure

Nothing we make is off the shelf. Every commission begins with a site visit to take exact measurements — because a piece of furniture should fit its room as though it grew there.

02

Honest materials

We build primarily in solid tulipwood — a stable, close-grained timber that takes paint beautifully and lasts a lifetime. No veneers, no shortcuts, nothing that won't stand up to daily life.

03

Hand painted finish

Every piece leaves our workshop hand painted in your chosen colour. We work predominantly with Mylands of London — a paint house with a lineage that matches our own values around quality and craft.

Built for period homes

Victorian and Edwardian houses have particular proportions and particular needs. We understand those homes intimately, and we build furniture that respects and enhances what's already there.
